MBBS, MS, FRACS
Dr Sam Hwang is a fellowship-trained ENT, head and neck surgeon who cares for children and adults across Sydney's inner west, western and south-western suburbs. He completed an international fellowship in head and neck oncology and microvascular free flap reconstruction at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Canada. That training covered reconstructive techniques that aim to restore function and appearance after the removal of tumours involving the oral cavity, pharynx, larynx and salivary glands.
Alongside his head and neck practice, Dr Hwang regularly sees children and adults for paediatric and general ENT, including surgery for obstructive sleep apnoea, and performs salivary gland surgery and sialendoscopy.
A defining feature of Dr Hwang's practice is his expertise in transoral robotic surgery (TORS), a minimally invasive approach that allows the resection of oropharyngeal tumours through the mouth without the need for external incisions or jaw-splitting procedures. For suitable patients, robotic surgery may allow a shorter hospital stay and a quicker return to swallowing and speech than a traditional open approach. As with any surgery there are risks, and whether TORS is appropriate is assessed individually at consultation. Dr Hwang also manages thyroid and parathyroid disease surgically and performs parotidectomy for salivary gland tumours.
Dr Hwang consults at Burwood, Gregory Hills, and Campbelltown. Urgent referrals for suspected malignancy are prioritised, and he works with radiation and medical oncology teams to plan care for patients who need combined treatment.
GPs, oncologists, and specialists can refer patients for consultation with Dr Hwang at Burwood, Gregory Hills, or Campbelltown. Urgent suspected malignancy referrals are prioritised.
