Sinus & Nasal Surgery in Sydney

Sinus and nasal surgery treats chronic sinusitis, nasal obstruction and structural problems that have not responded to medical therapy. Performed entirely through the nostrils under general anaesthesia, these procedures restore sinus drainage, improve nasal breathing and relieve symptoms such as facial pressure, congestion and loss of smell without any external incisions.

Procedures We Perform

Central Sydney ENT offers the full range of sinus and nasal procedures, tailored to each patient's anatomy and disease pattern:

Endoscopic Sinus Surgery (FESS)

Functional endoscopic sinus surgery is the gold-standard treatment for chronic sinusitis that has not improved with medications. A rigid telescope and microsurgical instruments are passed through the nostrils to open blocked sinus drainage pathways, remove diseased tissue and nasal polyps, and restore normal sinus ventilation. Our surgeons use image-guided navigation, a real-time 3D mapping system, to operate with millimetre-level precision around critical structures such as the eyes and skull base.

Septoplasty

Septoplasty corrects a deviated nasal septum: the partition of bone and cartilage between the left and right nasal passages. A crooked septum can obstruct airflow on one or both sides, worsen snoring, and prevent effective sinus drainage. Through an incision inside the nose, the surgeon repositions or removes the deviated portions of cartilage and bone to create a straighter, more open nasal airway. Septoplasty is frequently combined with sinus surgery or turbinate reduction in a single anaesthetic.

Turbinate Reduction

The inferior turbinates are bony shelves lined with tissue on the side walls of the nose. When chronically swollen due to allergies, irritants or vasomotor rhinitis, they block nasal airflow and contribute to congestion. Turbinate reduction shrinks the turbinates using radiofrequency energy, submucosal resection or outfracture, preserving the mucosal lining while significantly improving nasal breathing. It is commonly performed alongside septoplasty.

Common Questions

Sinus & Nasal Surgery FAQ

How long does endoscopic sinus surgery take? +
Endoscopic sinus surgery typically takes between one and three hours, depending on the extent of disease and whether additional procedures such as septoplasty or turbinate reduction are performed at the same time. Most patients go home the same day or after a single overnight stay.
What is the recovery time after sinus surgery? +
Most patients return to desk-based work within five to seven days and resume full physical activity within two to three weeks. Nasal congestion and mild discharge are normal for the first one to two weeks. Complete mucosal healing takes six to twelve weeks, during which regular saline rinses and post-operative debridement visits are important.
Will I have visible scarring after nasal surgery? +
No. Endoscopic sinus surgery, septoplasty and turbinate reduction are all performed entirely through the nostrils. There are no external incisions and no visible scarring on the face.
Does Central Sydney ENT perform sinus and nasal surgery? +
Yes. Central Sydney ENT has six FRACS-qualified ENT surgeons experienced in endoscopic sinus surgery, septoplasty and turbinate reduction. We operate at accredited hospitals in Burwood, Campbelltown, Gregory Hills, Ultimo, Drummoyne, Hunters Hill and Miranda, using image-guided navigation for precision.
